Welcome Dr. Dana Howell, New Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy Chair
Announcement of New Associate Dean Colleen Schneck; and New Department Chair Dana Howell
For the past 15 years, the EKU Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy has prospered under the leadership of Colleen Schneck, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA. Dr. Schneck’s numerous accomplishments as Chair of the Department include obtaining a U.S. Department of Education grant that provided 5 years of funding for 77 students to work with children and youth in rural areas. Dr. Schneck also spearheaded the department’s successful re-accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) for the maximum time allowed. Also during this time, Dr. Schneck led the inception of our post-professional doctorate (OTD) program; and U.S. News and World Report ranked our master’s degree program at 24th nationwide. While fulfilling all these responsibilities, Dr. Schneck maintained a professional scholarship agenda in the discipline as well as representing EKU effectively at the state and national levels. These examples are only a few of Dr. Schneck’s many valuable contributions and achievements.
In mid-2019, Dr. Schneck accepted a new position as Associate Dean of the EKU College of Health Sciences after serving 4 years as a part time Associate Dean. In concert with this change, the EKU Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy is pleased and excited to announce the appointment of Dana Howell Ph.D., OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA, as Chair of the Department.
Dr. Howell attained her clinical doctorate in occupational therapy from Creighton University in 1999 and her research doctorate in adult education from the University of Idaho in 2006. She joined EKU as Associate Professor in 2006 and was tenured and promoted to Professor in 2011. Dr. Howell’s clinical experience spans inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing facilities, work hardening, and home health. She is the founding editor of the Journal of Occupational Therapy Education (JOTE) and has extensive research expertise in interprofessional education, qualitative research, and quality of life with disability.
Dr. Howell has been an exemplar of trend-setting education, research, and service throughout her career (link to bio and CV). Her most recent high-level honors in 2019 include appointment as an EKU Foundation Professor as well as selection to the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Roster of Fellows for Excellence in Leadership and Mentoring in Interprofessional Education.
We extend hearty congratulations to both Dr. Colleen Schneck and Dr. Dana Howell on their accomplishments and new positions.
