Dr. Dana Howell joins the roster of Fellows for AOTA

Dr. Dana M. Howell’s sustained contributions over the past 25 years to occupational therapy embody the values of the profession. As a trend-setter she has expanded recognition of OT’s role in interprofessional education with her expertise as an ongoing scholar, leader and mentor. Her interprofessional work demonstrates Boyer’s Scholarship of Integration, synthesizing information across disciplines over time, with dissemination within appropriate venues (publications and presentations). Her research contributions are far reaching. She has been recognized repeatedly throughout her career by various awards for her contributions in scholarship.  As a leader, she has been a powerful advocate because of her expertise with interdisciplinary education.  She exhibits consistency in her professional leadership contributions across her lifespan.  She has actively volunteered professional knowledge in the community through membership and participation in groups addressing chronic conditions and Interprofessional practice. 

She has served as a reviewer for multiple OT journals, Journal of Allied Health and is the founding editor of the Journal of OT Education (inaugural issue released in concert with the Centennial Year April 2017) demonstrating advanced commitment and valuing of scholarly contributions and shaping of the profession.

As a mentor, she utilizes a collaborative work style bringing colleagues and students across disciplines together.  Her ability to facilitate a group, stay focused on outcomes further demonstrates her leadership abilities.  She celebrates the contributions of others, and as a true mentor, can take a step-back, allowing others their time in the limelight, supporting their initiatives.

Dr. Howell’s longstanding commitment as a scholar, leader and mentor to the profession of occupational therapy is noteworthy. It is therefore appropriate that the profession acknowledge these contributions by her selection to the AOTA Roster of Fellows for Excellence in Leadership and Mentoring in Interprofessional Education.
